Hello, everyone. My name is Hsiu-Ching Peng. I am currently a fourth-year student at the Graduate Institute of Humanities in Medicine (GIMH), Taipei Medical University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), but I have worked in teaching and administrative posts for over 13 years. When I was serving in the hospital’s Department of Medical Education, I was involved in the development of a Medical Humanities curriculum for medical students. Through this experience, I became interested in Medical Humanities, and wanted to learn more about the topic. The reason why I wanted to study at the GIHM had a lot to do with my career. I hoped that what I learned from the program would be helpful for my career. However, after studying for only one semester at the GIHM, I was reallocated to the Department of Medical Imaging, which to me, was a totally unfamiliar environment. As a result, I changed my research topic in order to ensure its relevance to my new post. This was the reason why I made Breast Screening in Women my new research topic. I intend to focus on exploring new ways of helping women become more active in managing their own health. Sadly, owing to my busy work schedule, my research has been delayed for 3 years.
Studying at the GIHM, I have learned that along the road to truth, it is necessary for me to change some of my old ways of thinking and beliefs, such as making judgments based solely on actual outcomes, overlooking the processes that led to those outcomes. Curious to know more about the Graduate Institute of Humanities in Medicine? I would suggest that you join us to experience it for yourself!
