TALK-2024.04.16 1-3 p.m 《Mothering from a short distance: Care and tension in Indonesian migrant families in Taiwan 》

" Mothering from a short distance: Care and tension in Indonesian migrant families in Taiwan "
This talk examines how Indonesian migrant workers start and sustain a family in Taiwan. Recently, some migrant workers became mothers in Taiwan with the assistance of non-governmental organizations. After the migrant mothers resume their jobs, primarily as domestic workers or caregivers, the children stay in shelters. This study engages with the rich literature on “mothering from a distance,” argued by Rhacel Salazar Parrenas. My talk examines how migrant parents care for their children while living separately from them on the same island of Taiwan. Compared to transnational families, Indonesian migrants in Taiwan can visit their children on holidays and provide care to them from a short distance. However, poor working conditions and economic resources also lead to tension in mothering.
