Eric Karchmer is a visiting assistant professor at China Medical University and formerly an assistant professor of anthropology at Appalachian State University. His research has focused on how postcolonial power inequalities have shaped the contemporary practice of Chinese medicine in mainland China, making it a uniquely hybrid form of medicine. His forthcoming book manuscript on this topic is entitled, Prescriptions for Virtuosity: The Postcolonial Struggle of Chinese Medicine. His new research project in Taiwan is called, “Nurturing Children in Contemporary Taiwan: Using Chinese Medicine to Heal Modern Imbalances.” In this project, he explores how Chinese medicine pediatricians and parents use traditional healing strategies to confront the dangers and uncertainties of modern society. Eric has also practiced Chinese medicine in the US for more than 20 years.
