Revisiting "The Metropolis and Mental Life": Contemporary debates on the psycho-social dimensions of cities in historical perspective

120 years after Georg Simmel published his famous essay on "The Metropolis and Mental Life," urban scholars, planners and designers are still grappling with the relationship between the built environment of cities, human psychology, and urban sociology. This talk provides a brief historical overview of how urban planning and design have sought to manipulate city spaces to achieve certain psychological and social ends, and provide a critical analysis of these from the perspective of the urban inhabitant and their right to the city.
