As urbanization and globalization intensify, the resources involved with food, energy and water production and distribution become increasingly strained, with clear environmental impacts. A growing field of food, energy and water nexus research (FEWN research) takes an interdisciplinary, multi sectoral approach to this problem to find innovative ways to increase resource access and efficient resource use. These issues remain under explored at the city scale, however, and rarely incorporate social research in their analyses. For this talk, I will look at how social-ecological functions of urban agriculture interact with FEWN resources in Taipei (through the Taipei Garden City project) to enhance cultural, provisional, regulatory and supportive ecosystem services. The Taipei Garden City initiative uses a variety of different land use types to promote health, recreation, social and environmental benefits within the city.
